Artist Spotlight: Mary Ann Cox

Mary Ann Cox is a native Georgian who has been painting since age six. Her grandmother got her started in painting by giving her a set of pastels so she would stay out of hers! She attended Georgia Southern University as a fine arts major, but she later switched to special education.

She taught special education in public schools for 16 years and then left teaching for a year. During her year off, she went back to college at Valdosta State University to finish her art degree. As fate would have it, before she could finish the degree, an elementary school art teacher position opened up and she took it without hesitation. She taught in the rural system of Irwin County for the last half of her teaching career. She was able to implement a fine arts program from the ground up and the school board rewarded her by making it a permanent position!

Since retiring in 2008, she has taught private and group art lessons to children and adults. She paints from her home studio in Bogart, Ga. and exhibits her work in and around the Athens area. She has won awards for her pastel paintings and is currently a member of the Georgia Watercolor Society, the Southeastern Pastel Society and the Athens Art Association.
